Even as the record industry continues to fall apart, the ritual is the same every fall. Besides the superstar releases, the shelves (or Amazon warehouses) are filled with compilations, box sets, reissues, and live albums.
A cynic would call it nothing more than a cash grab, and they wouldn't be wrong. For a serious music fan, though, it's quite often a few dreams coming true. This year is no different. An 18-disc Bob Dylan box set may be overkill for all but a few nutjobs, but the six-disc set of 1965 outtakes is quite possibly the best of his entire "Bootleg Series". The same with the six-disc live set of The Jam, "Fire and Skill". How can I resist buying a box that features one concert for every year they existed?
