Rural Ledge-ucation #85: David Menconi and Whiskeytown
As music critic for the Raleigh (NC) News and Observer, David Menconi has been covering the career of former Whiskeytown leader Ryan Adams since his first band, The Patty Duke Syndrome. He has witnessed countless performances over the years, and has also interviewed him numerous times to promote band and solo releases.
Menconi has recently published an excellent look back at Adams' time in Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown. Utilizing his backlog of interviews not only with Ryan but former band members, friends, and other witnesses to capture that initial burst of creative energy (and personal instability) that makes Adams' such a polarizing character to this day.
Besides interview segments that bookend this show, this week's show spotlight's the second Whiskeytown album, Stranger's Almanac. Menconi says this album perfectly captures life in Raleigh, so in the book he "imagined the album as a narrative of a night on the town". For this episode, Menconi performs a reading of the entire chapter, accompanied by each of the album's tracks.
A special thanks must go out to Allison Green, who helped set up this interview. You can find this show in the iTunes store, stream it via Stitcher or The Ledge android/iPhone app, or...
