Live Ledge #226: BBC
Even before they landed in America and became known as the "British Invasion", the leading British bands of the early 60's were routinely featured in live settings on British radio. While this was partly due to a requirement that limited the number of "records" that could be played per day, it was also an opportunity for bands to take some chances. They'd try out new songs they've written or cover some of their old and/or current favorites.
While the BBC no longer has to worry about the amount of live material they broadcast, up to this day they have continued to broadcast both concerts and in-studio sessions. Obviously, John Peel's "Peel Sessions" are the most famous of these types of shows, but a number of other famous DJ's had their own versions of these sessions.
Since there's already been a Live Ledge devoted to Peel, tonight's broadcast stayed away from his archives (although it's inevitable that one or two tracks originated from his show). Instead, this is 50 years of live BBC recordings, from the Beatles covering "Hippy Hippy Shake" to a track from Off's Record Store Day release of live tracks from the broadcasting behemoth.
