Live Ledge #182: 1995
The beginning of the new year found a number of sites publishing "shocking" articles about the 20 year anniversary of a number of supposedly classic albums. Obviously, that inspired tonight's show, although I can guarantee that the vast majority of records listed in those stories won't see any airplay here.
Looking back, I had two primary music forces running my life in 1995. The Americana scene was gathering momentum, and the year was wonderful for that type of music. Uncle Tupelo had broke up two years before, and their subsequent bands, Wilco and Son Volt, released wonderful debut records. Steve Earle came out of jail with a triumphant comeback album, Train a Comin', and other acts such as Dashboard Saviors, Blue Mountain, and the Jayhawks also released strong albums.
Besides the country-ish sounds of those acts, noisy punk-influenced rock and roll dominated my CD player. The list of these types of albums could go on for hours and hours, including Rocket From the Crypt, Supersuckers, Mudhoney, and Archers of Loaf. Female-fronted rock was also strong that year, from the alternative pop of Elastica and Throwing Muses to the fury of Sleater-Kinney and Babes in Toyland.
It's a fun show, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I'd love to hear what you also listened to that year, so feel free to comment. Maybe there will be a future followup show!
